Came home and ate some dinner. Balanced my checkbook which always takes me forever to do. I hate math! Watched Disc 2 of the Desperate Housewives DVD's.
I received some wonderful gifts from my friend Cheryl in IL. She sent me this adorable bear holding a sun that says, "Cheer Up!" He's so cute! And, I received a beautiful arrangement of flowers and some balloons. It was such a nice surprise and yes, it did cheer me up!
You all know that I've been in this funky mood late and she ordered these things to cheer me up! How blessed am I to have Cheryl as a friend and in my life? I'll post some pictures of my lovely gifts in my next blog post.
The plan of attack for today:
*Have to go to school this morning to prepare "possible sub plans." I may or may not have jury duty on Monday and I have to leave some sub plans just in case. I have to call a number today after 3:00 pm to see if I have jury duty. Either way, I have to call the secretary that calls in the subs, to let her know if I need someone on Monday.
*I'm working from 1:00-5:00 pm today at the doggie place.
*I'm meeting my friend Annette in Epping, NH at 6:00 pm and we are then driving up to UNH to see her son Darryl in a play. Annette and I have been friends since my Timberlane days. Her son was in the class that I advised so I'm looking forward to seeing him and his Mom.
Pretty busy Friday overall!
PS Got my federal tax refund (gotta love that automatic deposit option!). :-)

Vacation - Day 3
Went to get my mammogram. Always a thrill to have your boobs squished to the size of a lemon. :-)
Afterwards, I headed up to the Manchester Barnes and Nobles to do hang out and do some school work. I actually finished all my correcting. Took me four hours but I did it and I'm ahead of the game. Unfortunately, it doesn't stay that way for too long.
Came home and made some dinner and watched some videos. My friend Carla bought me a few DVD's of Sex in the City Essentials. They each have three episodes that revolve around a theme (Example: Lust, Romance, etc.). I love the show and would love to eventually own the entire collection but it's so expensive!

Vacation - Day 2
We saw Brokeback Mountain after dinner. What a powerful film! I can see why it's getting all the Academy Award nominations. Sad but amazing - go see it!

*Do laundry.

*An appointment with my counselor @ 1:00.
*Work at Pawsitively Best Friends until 5:00.
*Come home, make some dinner, and watch some DVD's.

Vacation - Day 1
I spent most of the day lounging around in my PJ's and watching videos. Watched In Her Shoes, The Wedding Date, and Sideways. You could say that I'm into chick flicks. I'm a hopeless romantic (another reason why I'm still single, perhaps?). I sometimes wish that life could end like one of those films. You know the ones I'm talking about. A happy ending?
I've been waiting for the Desperate Housewives DVD Volume 1 Season 1 at my local library. They have all the other DVD's but not the first one. So, I broke down and went to the video store and just rented it. I really want to see what all the hype is about this series. Well, I watched the first DVD and I'm officially hooked! Wow! Amazing storyline and acting! Now, I can't wait to go to the library tomorrow and pick up the rest of Season 1 (library was closed today due to the holiday).

Better Mood????
Good news . . . . I'm on Feb break in two more days.
Kids are really hyper and crazy right now and the week is going by rather slow.
I have Book Club tonight. I'm hosting this evening at my place. It's the first time everyone will see the condo. We will probably order takeout (Chinese, perhaps?) and then discuss the book. I choose Teacher Man by Frank McCourt (he wrote Angela's Ashes). I really enjoyed the book. McCourt talks about his 30 plus years experience as a New York City high school English teacher. He has some amazing stories to share with the reader. I think most people in Book Club enjoyed the book. Since most of us are teachers, I'm sure we all related to the book in some way.

I would love to be able to pinpoint "the mood" -
Could it be my financial problems?
Could it be my 35th birthday?
Could it be that I lost a childhood friend - she just doesn't want to be my friend anymore and I don't know why?
Could it be that I've been alone now for over seven years?
Could it be that I really would like to get married and have children some day and that the reality of it is that it just may not be meant to be?
Try and focus on the positive things in my life - that is what my counselor would tell me. That is what all my "peeps" are going to tell me -

Happy List
1) Worked a basketball game tonight for three hours and made $50 cash! Bonus!!! :-)
2) I was asked by the advisors of Model UN (United Nations) at my school to chaperone the trip in March to New York City and I said yes! There will be four of us chaperoning the trip - two are from the History Department and one is from the English Department. The three of us get along really well so it sounds like a great time in the Big Apple! I have such wonderful and thoughtful colleagues - when one of the them couldn't go on the trip - they recommended me!
3) I paid off some of my major debt this week! YEAH!!!!
4) Ellie the Cat! Just because! :-)
5) My birthday is next week. Part of me feels happy about it - part sad. I turn the BIG 35!

Does money make the world go round?
Got my taxes done yesterday. I'm not getting back as much as I had hoped. I was hoping to get a nice refund this year to pay off some of my debt. That ain't happening! Ughy!
I don't get it - how do people do it? Continue to pay their bills and keep their head above the water. I literally live pay check by pay check. There is no "extra" money to do anything (Ex: fun stuff like going to the movies or out to dinner with friends).
Of course, being a teacher and getting paid shit doesn't help my financial situation out at all. I made a choice to work a job that I love. But, the salary is shit. Dear God - I need to live for goodness sake! I wish that society (the government, the media, the tax payer, etc.) would realize what we as educators do and get nothing for it. I work a second job and still it is not enough. I'm even thinking of getting a third job! How effective will that make me in the classroom?
Life sometimes just sucks! :-)

Duh!
Grandma's surgery was today - not Monday.
She's having a procedure done on her stomach. Nothing too serious. She's been having stomach problems for the past 10 years but her Dr. wants to make sure it's nothing more serious than that.
I'll talk to Mom tonight to find out how it went. Dad was "the chosen one" out of his sisters and brother to take her to the hospital this morning.
For 91 years old, Grandma is doing pretty well. A little slower than she used to be but overall, still good. I visited her when I was in IL over Christmas break. She was crocheting a baby blanket for my cousin Scott's soon to be baby!
It amazes me that she still makes blankets and quilts at her age!

She informed me that Sadie the Cat is doing well and is recovering quite nicely.

I just want you to know how grateful we are to you and all of your fellow blogging 'peeps' for all of the kind words of encouragement and prayers for our cat. You are truly a very special friend that I am so thankful to have! Sadie had her 10 day check up and her recovery has been better than the vet ever hoped it to be. I mentioned your blog to him and he said that it worked well!!! She's not showing any further lumps, her healing has been better than he thought & he mentioned that she is a strong cat and that all of her wounds looked great! What a relief!

Revolution!
I started the French Revolution today in my World History classes. I'm trying to get them into the idea of why people revolt: money (taxes), power, politics, etc. I asked them to respond to these questions: 1) How would you define revolution? 2) What would it take for you to revolt against something and what would that something be? 3) How would you organize your revolution?
My students just sat there and said, "There's nothing to revolt against." My response, "You are all angst teenagers! There has to be something in your lives that you would revolt against!"
At one point, I'm literally standing on top of a student desk and yelling revolution at my students! Again, they look at me like I'm losing my mind! Well, I guess I am losing my mind! At last, they start to laugh at me - YES! They are finally awake!
Again, I ask the questions. Finally, I get some response.
Ahhh . . . the joy of teaching the youth of America!
PS My assistant principal walks by my classroom at the moment when I'm standing on a student desk and yelling me head off at these kids! He just shakes his head. Another "what the hell is she doing" moment! :-)

*Fat Friday at school today. Fat Friday is the first Friday of every month. One department each month is in charge of providing a huge buffet of food for the day. Today, Foreign Language and Special Education were in charge. Yummy!!!!

Give me meds . . . .
It's definitely a sinus infection gone bad! This cold/sinus thing has been making the rounds around my school since December. Of course, just like any "family", we pass those icky germs to each other.
The Dr. put me on antibiotics and a nasal spray to clear this nasty beast right up!

Doctor, Doctor - Give Me the News!
Sorry! Had a major 80's flashback for a second there. :-)
I'm doing it! I've finally made a Dr's appointment for tomorrow after school. I can't deal with this head cold sore throat cough feel like your lungs are going to come out of your mouth at any moment illness.
Have a Department Meeting right after school tomorrow but I made my appointment for 4:30. I'll keep all ya posted.
I'm hoping for some serious meds to knock this thing right out of me!

Professional Development Day for Me!
OK, I actually went to Harvard at the National Resource Center for Russian, East European,and Central Asian Studies at the Davis Center for a workshop on the 1905 Revolution.
It was quite the adventure for me. I took the commuter rail train out of Newburyport at 5:55 AM!!!!! I ended up in North Station at 7:00 AM. This gives me plenty of time to take the Green Line to the Red Line to the Harvard Square T Stop. The workshop started at 8:30. So, I follow the directions that were given to me to find the location of the workshop. I've taken about six workshops at the Davis Center but they have recently moved back on campus. If you've ever been to Harvard, it can be very confusing to find your way around campus. I walk across "The Yard" to the other side of the campus. Needless to say, I ended up getting lost. I wandered around campus for about half an hour until I finally found the right building. Other folks were getting lost too so I didn't feel so bad. I thought it was just me - apparently not!
Once I got there, everything was fine. The workshop was amazing! The organizers always bring in these experts on the topic from all over the academic community including Harvard. This professor (Dr. Sally Paine) from the Naval War College in Newport, RI spoke about the Russo-Japanese War in Meiji Grand Strategy. She was telling us that she team-teaches with a Marine. She does the history and he focuses on the military strategy. Can you imagine the energy that goes on in that classroom?
One of my former colleagues from Timberlane, Ray was at the workshop. He came with another teacher from Timberlane.
By the end of the day, I was VERY educated and ready to come back home. This time, I knew my way back to the Harvard Square T Stop. I took the commuter rail back to Newburyport and was back home by 5:00 pm.

Updates
*FINALLY! I completed correcting all those Midterm Exams and got all my grades done by the Friday, Noon deadline at school. It wasn't an easy task to complete being sick and all! The new semester started on Monday on top of all the correcting so I had to get organized for that - there should be a law that we get the week off to correct those beast of an exams. And, I might add that the kids didn't do that hot on them. I swear that teachers spend more time designing and correcting the exam than the kids spend studying for the damn test!
*Still have this crazy cold that won't go away! I just don't get it. I've been taking all sorts of meds for it. It's a battle of the cold vs. M-Dawg. Who will win???????
*Tea is my new best friend!
*Kids say (or write) the dardnest things! A few weeks ago, my students had to write a movie review paper on the film, "Elizabeth." The funniest sentence was this one - "Queen Mary had the Protestants burned at the STEAK for their religion." The red meat???????? Those poor Protestants! :-)

Still feeling the icks. I did go into school today. Partly because I'm so behind in correcting and partly because I don't want psycho sub again!
I went in this morning and of course nothing I left was done. Surprise on that one!
I went to my Principal today and explained to him what has been happening. The downfall - I know have one of the secretaries upset at me because I went over her head. I feel bad but she wouldn't listen to me or anyone else when we tell her that this psycho sub should not be a substitute teacher.
On a positive note - I'm in correcting hell right now!

The Blahs - Part II
My throat is killing me and I sound like a man when I speak - might be attractive to some folks out there! The fever has finally gone away.
Went to Brooks Pharmacy to pick up some good drugs to knock this cold right out of me (I hope).
I just found out that I have the sub that no one ever wants to cover their classes today. I'm not a happy camper. I feel like I should've gone into school now because I've subjected my students to this horrible lady! I shouldn't feel that way but I do! Unfortunately, we have a major substitute teacher shortage so we are sorta stuck with what we have for now. Ughy! I can guarantee that everything I left to get done, will not get done because this sub tends to do whatever SHE wants to do! She shares inappropriate stories with the kids too - like how she used to do drugs, etc! Can you imagine? I know a lot of the teachers have complained about her but for some reason, she keeps getting called back to sub. I just don't get it -
Well, time to take some medicine so I can feel better to go to school tomorrow -

Softball Season Already?????
The athletic director emails me my softball schedule - Get this, the first game is April 12th! The season officially starts on March 20th! Can it be? It seems so early!
Oh, and for the record - there will still be snow on the ground until April vacation so all those games scheduled before that - won't be happening! How do I know this? I've been doing the softball thing for a few years now. New England weather tends to not cooperate with a softball schedule. In fact, we start our practices in the gym! Yes, the gym! And, to add more fun to this, because I'm the freshman coach, I get the worst practice schedule. Usually about two weeks into the season, I'm forcing the girls outside for practices because I'm so sick of being in the gym for 8:00 - 9:00 pm practices! Ughy!!!
I hope I get a good groups of kids on my team this year. The past two years, I've been very lucky! The girls have been great! Positive, energetic, enthusiastic, etc.
In fact, it's because of my softball players that I have the nickname - M-Dawg!
Oh, another bit of news. Fantasy baseball starts up soon! A bunch of the faculty at my school started up a Fantasy Baseball league on Yahoo. It's so much fun! Last year, I came in 7th.

The end of Exam week is almost here . . .
I'm still correcting movie review papers. I haven't even gotten to the Midterm exams yet.
The last day of exams is Friday. Can I make it? Can my students make it?
Taking the exams is so mentally draining for my students. It's a good thing, don't get me wrong. They should be tested on the material from the past semester. But my poor freshman are wiped! Most students are finishing up my exam in the two hour span. Some actually have to stay at least an hour after that to finish it.
My goal this year was to raise the bar. Bring my standards up. I need to challenge my students more. I don't feel like I've been doing that the past few years. I'm not helping my students if I don't challenge them - make them work hard!
My head hurts from all the correcting I've been doing the past week. Let's hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Grades are due next Friday @ Noon. Can M-Dawg do it?????????

Raving Evaluation!
I was shocked on how good the review was - it makes me feel really good to know how I'm appreciated in a job that I absolutely adore!
This was the first hurdle of my third year. The second and final hurdle will be my formal evaluation from my Principal. The third year is an important year - you get what's called professional status. MA did away with tenure for their educators back in 1994. I've worked so hard to get to this point. I really enjoy teaching at Newburyport High School. I love the kids! I love the folks I work with. The community is great too! I hope to get professional status by the end of this school year.
So, at some point this next semester, I will be formally evaluated by the Principal. I'll keep ya all posted on that one! I'll be totally stressed out!
As a side note, we started Midterm exams today. The building is so different during exam week. Very quiet! The craziness begins - correcting hell! Why did I have to design a 25 page exam? Duh, I have to correct the beast of an exam - not my most brilliant move! But, we were told the test had to last the kids at least two hours! My exam will take at least that.
Oh, if ya see any 9th grader pulling out their hair and freaking out - that would be one of my students!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day!
"Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free.One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land.
So we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.
This note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
So we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice. We have also come to this hallowed spot to remind America of the fierce urgency of now. This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. Now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of God's children. Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the Negro. This sweltering summer of the Negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality. Nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning. Those who hope that the Negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual. There will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights.
The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges. But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead. We cannot turn back. There are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "When will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities. We cannot be satisfied as long as the Negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one. We can never be satisfied as long as a Negro in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote. No, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
I am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations. Some of you have come fresh from narrow cells. Some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality. You have been the veterans of creative suffering. Continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
Go back to Mississippi, go back to Alabama, go back to Georgia, go back to Louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed. Let us not wallow in the valley of despair. I say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.
I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal." I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood. I have midterm exams this week. Should be interesting! My exam is 24 pages long! Yes, you read it correctly! 24 pages! I have to keep my freshman busy for the entire two hour testing period. The kids are already freaking out over the test - I gave them a study guide to study but I think they will freak out no matter what I do. It's the first time they've ever had an exam of this magnitude. It's good for them!
I also assigned a movie review paper on Elizabeth that was due the end of last week so I have those papers to grade. I've been working on the papers most of the weekend. My semester grades are done with the exception of the movie review papers so all I have to do is plug those numbers into my grading program. I'm using a new grading software package this school year. My school finally decided to invest in GradeKeeper. I like it so far. It's pretty easy to figure out. And, if a kid wants to know their grade right that second, all I have to do is print out a report on their grades.
So, if I'm not blogging or emailing a lot this week, please know that it's because I'm in midterm exam hell and not ignoring you!

Pictures of Starved Rock State Park - IL

While I was in IL, my parents wanted to check out the eagles nests' that have been growing at Starved Rock State Park. Unfortunately, the observation deck was closed due to the holiday (Jan 1st) so we couldn't get a good look at the eagles. My parents brought their binoculars. We did see one of the eagles on top of a tree. The eagles built their nests on an island in the middle of the Illinois River - just before the lock and dam.Stress!!!!!!
Please excuse me for not writing a lot in the blog the past few days.
I've been a little stressed out!
Here is the scoop:
1) I'm entering into one of the most stressful times for a teacher - midterm exams! Exams officially start next Tuesday. However, you have to finish whatever curriculum that needs to be taught in two days, type out that 30 page plus exam, photocopy the test, type up a study guide to help the students prepare for the damn test, correct the stupid exam, and get grades done. All in about a week! I swear that the teachers care more about the stupid exams then the students. All I know is that I put a ton of time into designing the exam, typing it, photocopying it, and then correcting it. Usually, the students do absolutely horribly on the exams. Midterm and Final exams count for 20% of their final grades. The exam tests them on all the material from the past semester.
2) I was formally evaluated by my department chair on Monday. This is a very important year for me - I will have professional status. MA got rid of tenure for teachers but now they have a new word for it - professional status. After three years, the school offers you professional status (Basically this means it is harder to get rid of you without a "sufficient or just" reason). I really enjoy teaching at Newburyport High School so I hope that they want me back for next school year. They seem to want me back. But, you never know!
3) Tax stuff. This is a new thing for me this year. Since I now own a condo, the tax game has completely changed for me. I'm hoping to get a huge tax refund this year! So, I'm trying to gather all my receipts and paperwork so I can get my taxes done. I want to get them done early so I get the refund sooner.
So, this is life. Crazy. But it's life!
The only good thing that keeps me going: knowing that there are other folks out there just like me!

Hooked up with Traci over the Break
I didn't take pictures of Traci and her new handsome son, Jeffrey, when I was out in IL over Christmas break.
I had the nicest visit with Traci. I also got to meet her boyfriend/fiancee, Mark. He's so nice and good to Traci and the baby. He's great with Jeffrey! Anytime a man changes a diaper - he's a rockstar in my book! :-)
Jeffrey was so cute! They totally lucked out - He's a great baby! I got to hold him. I adore holding babies!

Need to lose weight!
If I don't do anything about this weight thing, it will cause me health problems down the road. I wish that I could eat "normal". I just can't. I've always struggled with my weight. It's that emotional eating that is out of control for me.
Get this - my Dad offers me $1,000 to lose weight. Yes, I know it's quite the incentive. Yes, I know that I need to take the weight off for health reasons. But, I just can't seem to put my heart into it. I'd be losing the weight for the wrong reasons. I need to lose weight for me. Not my Dad or the money.
I've always felt like I wasn't ever good enough for anyone - my parents, my boyfriends, my friends, my career. I guess I take out my feelings by eating. The only problem is that I'm hurting myself big time here. And, it can't continue on the rate it is going.
I've tried everything to lose weight. I've spent thousands of dollars on weight programs (weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc.), diet pills, gym memberships, etc.
Why can't I just be normal??????????????

I Can Finally Post the Pics of the Card Album

This was the gift that I made for Mom's B-day. She buys cards all the time. Mom stores the cards in my old dresser drawer. She always forgets what cards she's bought. So, I thought this book would make a great way for Mom to organize herself with all her cards. On each pocket, you can label the birthdays, anniversaries, or special holidays for folks.I took the class back in the beginning of December at A Scrapper's Heaven. FYI: For you local folks, they are offering the class again on Saturday, January 14th. I choose to do each month as a theme. Some people in the class focused on one color throughout the entire book. It depends on the person that you are making the Card Album for. For example, this one lady in the class choose the color purple. She had a purple album, different shades of purple and flowered paper for the inside pages, and purple ribbon. I thought my Mom would enjoy all the different colors and themes for each page. The second photo represents August - I thought fish would be a nice theme for August. For September, I choose a school design paper to represent back to school.
I finally presented Mom the Card Album to her on December 23rd. She loved it! :-)

I'm Back!!!!!
I missed you all!
I made it back safe and sound. I flew back this afternoon from Chicago.
Had a nice visit with my family. I was able to see a lot of my friends too! I'll post some pictures later on in the week of my IL trip. I finally took pictures of Mia, my folks Yorkie. My Mom told me she's been mooping around since I left this morning! Isn't she just the cutest thing? I left one unhappy animal to arrive to a very happy kitty! Ellie missed her Momma! :-)
I'm tired! I've been unpacking (Santa was very good to me this year). And, I went grocery shopping since we may or may not have a Nor'easter coming into New England tonight, tomorrow, and Wednesday. I had no food in the house so I thought it might be a good idea to get some food in case we get this storm.

I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane!
I leave tomorrow AM for Chicago so I won't be blogging. I'll be checking email from IL but that's it.
I got all my correcting done so I don't have to worry about school work hanging over my head while I'm on break.
Flightline is picking me up at 5:30 am - yes, you read it correctly, 5:30 am!!! My flight leaves Manchester at 8:55 am and I want to make sure I get at the airport nice and early. Why? Because it's Southwest (open seating) and I would like to try and sit in the emergency row exit (my long legs get very sore when I have to sit in the regular seats).

Five Weird Habits About Myself:
1) I CANNOT go to bed unless the dishes are done! I will toss and turn in bed and just finally get up and do them. Bizarre????
2) I have to tell Ellie "Be a good girl and Momma loves her" everyday before I leave for school! I know Ellie is a good kitty. I know she knows I love her. But I just feel like saying it aloud to her. Strange??????
3) I have to talk to my Mom on the phone everyday otherwise my day is not complete! Since I moved to New England in 1994 from IL, my Mom and I talk on the phone almost everyday. It may sound like a strange habit to some (and expensive) but I NEED to talk to my Mom. My Dad finds it strange but Mom talks to both Mandy and I every single day. Mom is my "bestest" friend. :-) Love ya Momma!
4) I am a compulsive neat freak! As a teenager, I was not normal. I would always keep my bedroom so clean. As an adult, I am always cleaning and organizing stuff at home or at school. My students just watch me and tell me, "Ms. Marenda, you are soooooo weird!" I guess I am. At school, I'm always organizing my cabinets or desks and it truly bothers me if things are not in it's place. Ask Lauren - when I temped at her company back in August, she couldn't get over how organized and clean my desk was at all times. OK, I'm a freak!!!
5) I love tomatoes! Love them! Will eat them anyway I can get them! Except: Get this - I HATE catsup! HATE it! Hate the smell. Hate the look of it. Hate the sight of it.

Busy, Busy, Busy Day

Greetings blog world! It's been a very busy Saturday.
I worked at Pawsitively Best Friends 11:00 am to 4:45 pm. The store was so busy today. It was a gorgeous sunny day in Newburyport and everyone was shopping. The store is so small so when you get a ton of people in it, it feels so smothering. Add to it the folks that bring in their dogs, and it's absolutely nuts! I love it when people bring their dogs into the store. We have treats that we can give them. I gave a treat to this dog and 10 minutes later, the dog lifted it's leg and peed all over the floor and card display. Thanks Doggie! Guess who had to clean it up??????
I met Carla for dinner and a movie. We went to Not You Average Joes for dinner and saw The Chronicle of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe at the Loop in Methuen, MA. Dinner was delicious! Always great company with Carla Lou! :-) I'm not a huge fantasy/science fiction person but the movie was OK. I read the book when I was younger. The animation is amazing (thanks to Disney!). I'm not a huge C.S. Lewis fan to begin with (Carla loves all his books).
I didn't get home until after midnight - late night for me! Very much past my bedtime! :-)

Personal Day Recap
But, I was able to start and finish my Christmas shopping all in one day! I arrived over at Rockingham Mall in Salem, NH around 8:30 am. I made a few stops at other stores in the Salem area and was finished by 1:00 pm! I was so proud of myself! The good thing about the icky weather was that there was no one out shopping. By noon, the weather switched to rain and more people ventured out to shop.
Had a minor issue with my bank this morning. There is a reason why I have direct deposit! I got paid today and knew that I would have enough money to do my holiday shopping. The online services and automated phone services were down (I tried speaking to a human but the lines were so long - no luck!) so I couldn't get any information on why the money wasn't in my account yet. When I went to the ATM, the available balance stated that I was in negative digits! I totally freaked! (Special thanks to Mom for listening to me rant and rave on the phone this morning :-) ) After five hours of not knowing what the heck was going on with my account, I finally was able to get some info through the automated services. I kept saying, "I'm not paying fees for overdraft because the bank messed up!" It ended up being all good and I tweaked for no reason at all. :-)

Informal Observation Today
He observed my A2 class - which is a team taught class with a SPED teacher in the room with me.
The class went smooth. I'll talk to Peter tomorrow and let everyone know how it went.
This wasn't a formal observation. I'm supposed to get two formals a year - one for each semester. The department chair always does one of the observations and an administrator does the other observation. This year, I have my principal, Jim, doing my formal for second semester. Peter will do my formal for this semester.
This is a big year because it is my third year. I will get what they call professional status after this school year. Massachusetts did away with tenure for teachers back in 1993 (Ed Reform of 1993). This piece of legislation also mandated that new teachers get their Masters degree in order to teach (within a five year time period) and pass the Teacher's Test. Veteran teachers were grandfathered into the clause. And, certification for life was taken away from the veteran teachers so know they have to get recertified every five years like the rest of us.
Gotta love those politicians who make decisions for us they have no clue what we work/deal with on a daily basis.
Good thing I adore my job and my students! :-)

What have you been up to lately?

It's that time of the year. The crazy time of the year. You know exactly what I'm talking about. The time of the year where you are running around with your head cut off buying expensive gifts for everyone under the sun, working tons of hours to be able to pay for those expensive gifts, going to those sometimes uncomfortable Christmas parties and just wish you would've stayed home, and my personal favorite: visiting relatives that you only see once a year and there is a REASON why you only see them once a year! :-)
I have to be honest: I really don't like Christmas. I haven't enjoyed Christmas since I was a little girl. Why? Lots of reasons. My grandmother died around this time of the year in 1988. I think the holidays are full of phoniness. This is supposed to be the nicest time of the year, right? People should be kind and considerate of others. Have you shopped at a mall lately? People pushing and yelling at other people. It's such a joke. I have to travel every year on the holidays and it totally sucks to be flying during this time of the year. Again, dealing with people being rude at an airport is not my idea of fun.
OK, enough of the Scrooge complaining. :-)
What is going on in M-Dawg's world?
*Trying to get all my curriculum that needs to be taught before midterm exams (January 17th-20th). Can M-Dawg do it?
*Working at Pawsitively Best Friends in Newburyport part-time for extra money. I usually work around 10-12 hours a week. I adore it - folks bring in their dogs! It's great that I get to be around the animals. Oh, in case you wondering, PBF is a doggie/kitty boutique. :-)
*Working on a few "projects." I can't go into too much detail due to the fact that some of the recipients of these projects read this blog. :-)
*Holiday parties. I don't really like them but I go to be social. Aren't I the party animal?
*Bonus: Getting ready to go to IL on December 23rd. I look forward to going to IL to see my folks and sister. And, having 11 days off of school. :-)

Rough Class A3
My patience is running very thin at this point with the class. The time of the year doesn't help. With Christmas approaching, my students are very hyper and high strung as it is. And Saint M-Dawg is no longer patient and kind with this type of crappy behavior.
My goal on Wednesday is to go in with a positive attitude and try to play the game with the class. I will give the class one more chance and if they can't handle controlling their own behavior, out come those behavior contracts.
I do adore the kids individually - but as a class, they are just way to crazy!
As a side note, I'm being informally observed on Wednesday in A2 by Peter, my department chair. It should be an interesting class because I have a SPED teacher in the room that is supposed to be team teaching with me and she doesn't contribute to anything in the classroom. Peter is observing me but I'm sure it will come out of the observation on how my teaching partner does nothing. It is a little frustrating but I've spoken to her about the expectations and she clearly doesn't want to do her part of the job. It's really sad. I got so spoiled by working with Carla and Donna in World Studies at Timberlane. They were the "bestest" teaching partners ever!!! :-) I miss the true concept of interdisciplinary team teaching - especially with the English teachers.

I'm a Survivor!

Saturday! Yup! Survived the storm! Hard to believe!
Got a knock on my door last night to move my car so that the plow could clean up the lot. I've already moved my car twice - here goes a third time. I was told to move the car to the back of the complex lot with everyone else. I sat in my car for over 45 minutes until the plow moved all that snow. Everyone sat in their car waiting. We looked like we were all in line for the car wash - except it was winter time! :-) Finally, I could park my car in my spot. I'm so glad of where my parking spot is located. Some folks lose their parking spot in the winter because people don't know how to park correctly so it messes everyone else up. I have no one on either side of me so I don't have to worry about it. My second parking spot in the back of the building is buried under a huge pile of snow right now. Good thing I don't use that spot.
On a positive note: the roads are clear. Everything is open again. I don't feel stranded anymore. Yah! :-)

Over a foot of snow in Amesbury!
Ellie doesn't know what to do. She looks out the window and sees snow. She hears new sounds - a snow blower and a snow plow. Ellie doesn't like these new noises. Poor Ellie!
I've unburied my car twice today. And, I can guarantee that I will have to unbury it on Saturday too. Good thing I don't work tomorrow until 2:00. Hopefully, that will give me enough time to dig myself out again. I guess I should invest in a snow shovel like other folks in my complex.
I never thought to take photos of this lovely weather we are having here in New England. Tomorrow, I'll take some pics and post them so all you folks out there that don't live here can see all the excitement that you are missing! :-0)
The good news is that I got a ton of stuff accomplished today. The bad news is that at some point I will have to leave the comfort of my home and risk it out there in the cold.
Is it too late to move to Florida? :-)
Still No Contract
Still trying to keep the faith -
We will do another rally on December 19th at the next school committee meeting. We will continue doing this until the contract is established.

Snow Day!

I have my first official snow day today! It seems too early in the winter to already have a snow day. According to Channel 7 News, there are over 325 school closings in the Boston area! Crazy stuff!
I got the phone call at 5:25 am - the snow hadn't even started yet and the superintendent already made the call to cancel school.
So, what is a gal to do on a snow day? I'll do some school work (correcting World Religions Exams), laundry, and some scrapbooking. Oh, and at some point, I'll probably have to dig my car out of the parking lot! :-)

Pearl Harbor
Of course, the history teacher will remember this day. Such a vital date in our history. The beginning of the US entry into World War II.
I watched the movie Pearl Harbor last night. OK, the romantic in me loves the film! The historian in me doesn't like it due to the inaccuracies. The 45 minute bombing scene in the film is actually pretty decently done.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of loved ones who lost someone at Pearl Harbor. There are still a few veterans floating around from Pearl Harbor.
And, my thoughts and prayers go out to our men and women overseas - those that won't be able to get home for the holidays. My cousin Danny is in Kuwait as I write this blog.

Quick Post
It's Hump Day!!!
Had a Department meeting after school today. Nothing too exciting there.
One of my colleagues (Aileen) is remodeling her loft and asked if it was OK to for me to watch her cat, Buddy for the evening. Aileen didn't want Buddy to be in the mess of the construction and noise. Poor Buddy! He was not a happy camper at my condo tonight. Buddy was also traumatized from the car ride over here. We kept Buddy in the second bedroom with the door closed to separate Ellie and Buddy.
Ellie didn't like having another cat in her house! She hissed at Aileen and me! Poor kitties! Aileen just picked up Buddy - he's going home.
Ellie is now really pissed off at me - how dare I bring another cat into her house? So, her momma is on the shit list for the time being - ughy!

Teacher Contract Negotiations Continue
Tonight, the NTA (Newburyport Teachers Association) had a rally to support the negotiating team. We met at the Elks Lodge for a meeting and buffet. At 5:30, we all drove over to the Middle School (which is where the School Committee has their meetings) and rallied our support for the contract negotiations. We had over half of the entire teacher population of the City of Newburyport show up for the rally - it was so cool!
We are trying to show the School Committee that there are human faces to this contract. The negotiating team has done an amazing job and has worked so hard to get this far for us. Two major issues of the contract: increase in salary and health care.
Keep your fingers crossed that all goes well tonight - :-)
Great Night Out w/ the Girls

Had a fabulous time last night with Janet and Lauren. It was wonderful of them to drive up to my neck of the woods for the evening. This was the first time they've seen my new place so I gave them the tour.
Afterwards, we headed to Newburyport for dinner at The Grog. Had a yummy dinner - started out with Clam Chowder - for dinner, steak tips with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. For dessert, I had a slice of pumpkin pie - just can't resist that pumpkin. Janet had the chicken caesar wrap and Lauren had the lobster roll. Both meals looked so yummy!

Thank you to everyone that commented on my blog regarding silly kitty! I'm so happy to read that Ellie is actually a normal cat. I don't know what is normal since Ellie is the first cat I've ever owned. It's so reassuring to know that her crazy behaviors are normal. :-)

My Silly Kitty!

Ellie is obsessed with my bathtub. And, I don't know why. Ellie will sit in the tub and play and pounce on"things." I don't know what "things" she pounces on but it is cute. I think she likes the sound of her claws on my tub! She also likes to sit in the tub after I have taken a shower. I think it's because she likes the warmth of the warm shower. I decided to capture the moment - after the photo was taken, she ran and hid under my bed.
Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Please let me know so I don't have to send Ellie to the "Funny Farm. "

Learning a new thing is good.

Last night, I took this scrapbooking class (http://www.ascrappersheaven.com/) at a local store. I can't go into too much detail about the actual class itself (Remember, it's a gift!), but I learned so much from it! Learning all of these techniques is such a good thing - I own so much stuff and I don't know how to use a ton of it. The instructor showed us how to do all of this cool stuff such as eyelets. For you veteran scrapbookers out there, you are probably thinking that this technique has been around forever. It has. However, I've never done it and I have all the materials for it. When I first bought the materials, I went online to see if I could get the directions on how to use eyelets. The web sites weren't helpful at all. I guess I needed someone to show me how to do it. That's my learning style anyway.
Scrapbooking is so much more crafty and creative today compared to back in the day when I used to do it as a young girl. I find the hobby very relaxing and fun. The best part: making beautiful gifts for loved ones!
FYI: After I give the gift to that special person, I will post photos of the finished product. :-)

Grateful!
Let me explain. There was this girl that I met today that had her car stolen in Cambridge! At first, she thought the car was towed by the city (she was illegally parked). After calling around, she finally realized that her car was stolen! Can you imagine? I feel so badly for her. She's only 24 years old and she's only been teaching for 1 year. She makes no money because she works at a private school and still lives at home. She called her insurance company and they told her that they can't do anything about it until 48 hours!
So, she has to wait two days until she can even get a rental car so she can at least drive around and get to work.
Ughy!
